Why is Permaculture the Answer?

How could something be the answer to everything? Is permaculture a cult or religion? In order to understand why permaculture is the answer, we must understand the question we are asking. There are so many questions like:

  • How do I live an abundant life in a world of scarcity?
  • How do I find meaning and purpose in a world so focused on the trivial and mundane?
  • How do I survive in a world where society is crumbling beneath mass psychosis?
  • How do I help the next generation live better than my generation?

Permaculture provides the methods for how to answer these fundamental questions about survival and purpose.

Accept Responsibility

Once you’ve accepted that as an adult, you are responsible for yourself, it’s important to realize, you’re also responsible for the world you leave to the next generation. Yes, we all depend upon God, but God has given us gifts to be able to care for ourselves and our loved-ones. We are integrated into the world through the needs of our mind, body and spirit. Our minds are amazing tools that God gave us to be able to observe, understand, and create solutions. Our minds need to be engaged in meaningful problem solving, or else they become unmanageable with delusions and vice. Our spirits require fellowship and purpose as sustenance. Without purpose and fellowship, our spirits are malnourished and become insular and isolated. Our bodies need clean air, water, food and security from the elements to survive and thrive. I am responsible for my needs, and for how I leave this world behind.

Discover the Principles and Ethics of Permaculture

So, how do we solve the multi-dimensional puzzle of providing for all of our needs, and living an abundant life? Imagine, how did all the people of the past survive without all our modern conveniences? They had a different way of life. There are many aspects of Permaculture that draw from the rich history and knowledge of the past, as well as modern interpretations and reasoning that has lead to a stronger understanding of why these practices produce results.

Check out this poster provided by Midwest Permaculture that clearly illustrates the principles and ethics.

Learn about the 8 Forms of Capital

Learning about the 8 forms of capital helped me to transform my perspective in understanding what actual wealth I have outside of only financial means. The purpose of understanding the 8 forms of capital is to foster the growth of a regenerative mindset. The desired outcome of developing a regenerative mindset is developing the habits that create growth within each of the 8 forms of capital that provide true abundance for all the dimensions of your life.

Join a Culture that Shares Your Values

Before finding people that share your values, it’s important to check your circle of friends. Do they want the best for you, or do they just show up when times are good, but leave you in the cold when you need them most? Are they focused on issues that ultimately result in wasted time and resources? It may be difficult, but it’s important to weed out bad friends before you find better ones. The best way to start is to take a Permaculture Design Course. You’ll meet like-minded people that are seeking to create a life of abundance. We recommend Midwest Permaculture if you live in the Midwest United States or Canada.

My New Hope

When I started my adventure with permaculture, my sense of purpose was renewed and my hopelessness about the state of the world was replaced with optimism and realism. I am no longer focused on masking the pain of my existence with temporary salves of toxicity and hedonism. My context has expanded with purpose to fit my new vision of myself. It is my sincere hope that this realization spreads to all the people of the world.
